One of the founding principles of Protea Hotels is the respect for human dignity.

This principle extends not only to our GUESTS, STAFF and STAKEHOLDERS but also to the communities in which our hotels function. Over the years Protea has built a legacy of community building and upliftment, from the large scale, high visibility projects with Reach for a Dream to the more inconspicuous but equally meaningful contributions to orphanages, old age homes and educational projects.

It has been said that it is more blessed to give than to receive and at Protea Hotels we strive to be a light to our communities and help to make a positive impact wherever our hotels are found.

The needs in our beloved continent are great but so is our belief that by being intentional about caring for those marginalised by society we can help reflect the beauty of life in our world.

To uplift and enhance the lives of those less fortunate in our community in a sustainable manner.

Protea Hotels is dedicated to the continuous upliftment of and social responsibility towards those less fortunate. Protea Hotels actively encourages a culture of philanthropy and community involvement amongst its employees. CSI initiatives are conducted as a TEAM effort. Our Corporate Social Investment Programme is directed at two of our identified STAKEHOLDERS being our STAFF and our COMMUNITY.

What we do

Head Office Departments

It is a requirement that our various departments become involved in Corporate Social Investment Programmes. They are each assigned a month whereby they must initiate ways of raising money for their chosen charity. This can be done by arranging raffles, games in the office, selling food, collecting second hand clothing, shoes, collecting perishables and many more. The departments have the option of approaching the CSI Committee for suggestions of NPO organisations to support. This is usually plenty of fun for all STAFF, as all the involvement, planning and final results are done by the departments STAFF members and in turn the efforts are supported by all other STAFF of Protea Hotels.

Other charities we supported include:

  • African Scholars Fund where we have bursaries to 15 children in High School
  • Pet Empowerment in the Townships and Mdzananda Animals in the Townships
  • Huis Martina
  • Conradie Care Centre
  • ACVV Zonnelbloem
  • Princess Care Home
  • Teddy Bear Clinic
  • Zip Zap Circus
  • Compass
  • Blind SA
  • Groote Schuur Cancer Ward
  • Pediatric Aids Treatment in Africa (PATA)
  • ORT
  • Blanket donations to STAFF and our community

Reach For A Dream

Reach For A Dream

Fulfils the dreams of children between the ages of 3 and 18 years, who have been diagnosed as having a life-threatening illness by a medical practitioner. We do not discriminate based on race, culture, financial status or any other factor. Each child living with a life-threatening illness is given a chance to dream. Protea Hotels fulfilled many children's dreams and our goal is to fulfil many more dreams in the next year. It is a humbling experience for all involved and we will continue to fulfil dreams to the best of our ability and with passion and respect.

Their efforts demonstrated incredible TEAM work by involving all of their STAFF. The determination to incorporate all the main focus areas set by the CSI TEAM such as animals, education, the elderly, HIV/AIDS and housing is highly commended. Further to this, their presentation of their submission was totally "out of the box", incredibly creative and original. Most importantly, they focused on sustainability. Working towards sustainable projects is what will ensure that we not only help those of today, but those of tomorrow too.

How We Do It

Grant Funding

Grants are non-repayable funds disbursed by one party (grant makers), often a government department, corporation, foundation or trust, to a recipient, often (but not always) a nonprofit entity, educational institution, business or an individual. In order to receive a grant, some form of "Grant Writing" often referred to as either a proposal or an application is usually required.

Most grants are made to fund a specific project and require some level of compliance and reporting. The grant writing process involves an applicant submitting a proposal (or submission) to a potential funder, either on the applicant's own initiative or in response to a Request for Proposal from the funder. Grant makers require grant seekers to have some form of tax-exempt status, be a registered nonprofit organization or a local government.

Emergency Relief

Disaster relief is the monies or services made available to individuals and communities that have experienced losses due to disasters such as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, drought, tornadoes, and riots. A disaster may also be defined in sociological terms as a major disruption of the social pattern of individuals and groups. Most countries have agencies that coordinate disaster relief and planning. Many have statutes that define appropriate procedures for disaster declarations and emergency orders. Such statutes also empower relief agencies to utilise local resources, commandeer private property, and arrange for temporary housing during an emergency.

Accommodation Vouchers

Accommodation vouchers are donated to Non-Profit Organisations (NPO) of which approximately 500 vouchers were issued during this financial year. Requests are received via the online application process, whereby the request is reviewed and then clarified to see if the organisation falls within the focus areas and fits the necessary requirements.

Complimentary Accommodation

Non-Profit Organisations are reviewed by the committee and then a decision is made whether the organisations meet the necessary criteria to be assisted with complimentary accommodation. We then select our chosen organisations which we support on a regular basis by requesting from hotels complimentary or discounted accommodation on their behalf.
